Visit Bergerac - what to visit in Bergerac

Bergerac



Bergerac is a lovely town, about 15 minutes drive from La Barrat. It is situated on the banks of the Dordogne, it is famous for its water sports, and has a beautiful old town where the winding, cobbled streets climb up from the river to the church and market place at the top of the town. There are many restaurants, cafés and shops. The market days are great with the whole town bustling with stalls selling local produce.

Visit the medieval village of Issigeac

Issigeac is our nearest large village/small town, a short two minute-drive from La Barrat. It is a beautiful medieval town that has hardly changed in hundreds of years. The town has three excellent restaurants, several bars and cafés, two small supermarkets, two chemists, two butchers, three bakers, a bank and a post office. You really won't need to travel further than this for your everydays needs.


Issigeac is famous for its Sunday market, which transforms this normally sleepy town into a bustling market for a few hours every Sunday morning.


The local tourist office not only provides local information but holds a series of art exhibitions. There are a couple of other small galleries in the town.

Visit Castillonnès - what to visit in Castillonnès

Castillonnès



Perched on its rocky spur overlooking the green Dropt valley, Castillonnes, a 13th century bastide, welcomes you with its beautifully restored heritage, its many shops and its quality crafts. The Mouthe walk will take you to the remains of the ramparts, the Guirlity postern, the Valets gate and the beautiful 18th century houses.
You can also visit the church with its baroque altarpiece and modern non-figurative stained glass windows.

The castle of Monbazillac



A listed historic monument dating from the 16th century, the Château de Montbazillac has a unique and original architecture, a mixture of medieval defensive systems and Renaissance elegance. Situated in the heart of the prestigious vineyard that bears its name, the view from the terraces of the park is an extraordinary panorama over the Dordogne valley. Fully furnished, the Château is open all year round for free or guided tours. At the end of the visit, a tasting of Monbazillac is offered to each visitor.

There are many walks around La Barrat: towards the lake, the vineyards or the just along the fram tracks and lanes. We have maps to make you discover more challenging walks or bike rides.

The region of Bergerac is recognized for the quality of its wines, with many vineyards extending from the 'Grands Chateaux" to the small farms. The opportunities for winetasting are endless. Dry Whites, crisp Rosés, fruity Reds are all available from just a few euros a liter.
Monbazillac, just at the edge of Bergerac is famous for its sweet white vine. All the vineyards offer free tastings.

There is a tiny local airfield, 5 km away, offering flights over the region for approximately 40 € for 20 minutes. It is a surprising experience for the brave. The aerial views of this site were taken in this way.
To go fishing near Issigeac

We are a 10 minute walk or 2 minute by car from a large lake where carp and perch fishing is allowed. A permit costs 30 euros and allows you to fish in all the lakes and rivers in the region. Alternatively, there is a small private lake, close to us where it costs a few euros per line, per day. We provide some basic fishing gear.

Each gite will have details of local market days in the area, evening market venues etc. There are some events out of season but the majority are in the summer months.

Evening markets



During July and August there are several evening markets each week. These are not like the morning markets but are actually about both buying and eating the food! Trestle tables are set up in the town or village square and local producers set up their stalls around the edge. It is possible to buy your dinner - maybe foie gras or a salad to start and possibly duck or chicken followed by cheese and fruit. These evenings are an excellent opportunity to have fun, meet people, eat well and drink local wine at vineyard prices. There is often dancing or music.


Bodega d'Issigeac - La Barrat

During the summer there' are a few festivals where a town will close off its roads and party all evening and into the night. There will be street bands, marching bands, food and drink stalls. The Issigeac Bodega is always held on the Sunday just before 14th July (Bastille day) but there are also Bodegas in Villereal and Castillonès.

14th July is festival time throughout France. It is a great time to visit as the French really do party at this time! Bergerac has a fabulous firework display each year on this day but all towns and villages will celebrate in one way or another.
